Atlassian recently announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), designed to strengthen and drive migrations to Atlassian Cloud.
Billed as a ‘multi-year strategic collaboration agreement’ (SCA), this partnership could redefine how organisations adopt Cloud solutions by reducing migration times and enhancing security.
So, join us as we take a closer look Atlassian’s continued investment in enterprise Cloud transformation, and analyse the impact this new collaboration may have on future Atlassian Cloud customers.
Strengthening the shift to Cloud
Over the past year, Atlassian has made no secret of its focus on a Cloud-first future. We’ve witnessed significant investment in its Cloud product portfolio, including AI innovations, unprecedented changes to Jira, and the introduction of Cloud-only features and tools.
Alone, however, this has not always been enough to encourage Atlassian Data Center users to migrate over the Cloud. This new strategic collaboration between Atlassian and AWS may contribute to turning that tide.
Cloud Centre of Excellence
One of the key takeaways from the Atlassian and AWS announcement was the establishment of a Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE), designed to streamline complex migrations for enterprise clients.
Atlassian cites a 50% reduction in migration time as a result of this collaboration, which may appeal to on-premises customers resistant to the idea of service interruptions and a lengthy migration process.

AWS credentials
Another clear message is AWS‘ strong reputation. As the hosting partner behind the Atlassian Cloud infrastructure, Atlassian has always promoted the web giant’s scalability, reliability and security. This new SCA now reinforces it.
This is a compelling – and essential – layer of Atlassian’s Cloud-first positioning: Supporting innovation and investment with peace of mind and reassurance around its infrastructure.
Bringing AWS innovation to Atlassian tools
In light of this announcement it appears that Atlassian will be leveraging the power of AWS not only in terms of driving Cloud migrations, but also in enhancing existing tools.
Of note is its investment in Atlassian Forge:
‘AWS and Atlassian will jointly explore bringing more AWS innovation into the Forge platform, including generative AI technologies like Amazon Bedrock for app development and end-user solutions.’
We expect that Atlassian will extend this approach to more tools across the System of Work, using AWS to unlock greater innovation, enhance integrations and accelerate development and deployment. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this.
AWS and Atlassian Strategic Collaboration Agreement: Our analysis
As an Atlassian Cloud Specialized Partner and Platinum Solution Partner, and as an AWS Select Partner, we have years of hands-on experience guiding organisations through the Cloud transformation projects.
We have also witnessed common objections, most notably around security and compliance and, to a lesser degree, the impact that complex Cloud migrations and associated downtime can have on an organisation’s operations.
In terms of the first issue, Atlassian’s continued promotion of AWS‘ reputation for security and reliability is certainly reassuring. However, it may not be strong enough, in isolation at least, to overcome compliance requirements.
What may have more on impact, on organisations who are not subject to compliance regulations, but who may instead be wary of Cloud transformation due to the prospect of BAU interruption, is the CCoE’s focus on reducing migration times by 50%.
From our perspective, one of the most compelling reasons to migrate to Atlassian Cloud is the continued investment and innovation across the Cloud product portfolio. At both Team ’24 Vegas and Team ’24 Europe, we were deeply impressed with some of the Cloud-first innovations showcased by Atlassian.
From Rovo agents to the continued evolution of Atlassian Intelligence features across Jira, Confluence and Jira Service Management (JSM), these tools are only available in Cloud products, but will become invaluable to the future of teamwork across the System of Work. It may be that, over time, these tools and features simply become unmissable.
