As I’m sure you will have already seen, Atlassian has announced the retirement of its Server deployment option, shifting its focus to Data Center and Cloud. Still being actively developed, Atlassian Data Center is able to provide the same functionality we’ve all come to know and love in our Server products, but instead it’s built for enterprises through its extended features and capabilities. These similarities make Data Center an optimal solution for organisations who are not yet ready to make the leap to the Atlassian Cloud. Atlassian will continue offering its robust self-managed enterprise edition, Atlassian Data Center, and strengthening the product by making some of its most powerful Apps available natively and offering support for them.
Developments in the DC universe
Despite Atlassian’s retirement of Jira Server, customers can still take advantage of developments in Data Center for their self-management needs. The following Atlassian-built apps and new functionality will be included with a Data Center subscription:
- Jira Software Data Center: Advanced Roadmaps (formerly Portfolio for Jira)
- Jira Service Desk Data Center: Insight – Asset Management, Insight Discovery
- Confluence Data Center: Team Calendars for Confluence, Analytics for Confluence
Atlassian is also planning to expand the Data Center family of products by including Data Center as deployment option for Bamboo.
Let’s talk pricing
To support Atlassian’s development into strengthening their Data Center products, Atlassian will be raising the price of its Data Center subscriptions. An outline of the changes as use cases is detailed below.
Currently Owns Jira Software (500 User Tier):
- If you initially purchased or were quoted for a new server license before the 3rd of October 2019, then you are currently on an advantaged price plan lower than Atlassian list prices. As such, there will be a price increase to bring these prices in line as of February 2021.
- If you purchased on or after the 3rd of October 2019, you will not see any price changes for these products at this time.
Currently Owns Jira Software (1,000 and above user tiers), Jira Service Desk, Confluence, Bitbucket, or Crowd:
- You will receive a price increase, however, will be placed on an advantaged price plan that will eventually rise to the new Atlassian list prices over time.
Purchasing a new subscription of Jira Software, Jira Service Desk, Confluence, Bitbucket, or Crowd on or after February 02, 2021:
- You will pay the new Atlassian list prices.
So, what does this mean for you?
This update from Atlassian, whilst exciting, urges customers to think about future changes, each with their own potential challenges. For customers who are more comfortable with Atlassian’s self-managed products, or those who are not yet ready to move to Cloud, Data Center could be a better fit. Moving to Data Center provides an opportunity not just to continue maintaining your Atlassian products however you’d like, but also to explore the additional capabilities better suited for enterprise organizations which were not available in Jira Server.
Migrating to Data Center can be as simple as entering a Data Center license key and restarting your instance. Additional features include project and issue archiving, rate limiting, disaster recovery, zero-downtime upgrades and SAML single sign-on.
